Hotel Good Luck tells the story of Bobby, a radio host with an obsession with death, and a fear and hatred for November 6th ever since the death of all four of his grandparents the last four November 6th’s. Bobby runs away on November 5th, and returns a year later to find his dog, Miller, dead in the middle of the road. That night Bobby dreams of going through a refrigerator into a parallel universe and when he wakes up, Miller is alive and well.
Bobby's best friend and psychoanalyst, Larry, explains that “This is clearly a case of dimensional simultaneity” and tells him that he should try to reenter the fridge if he wants to go back. That night, Bobby’s parents die, but after going through the fridge, he wakes up to them alive as well. Each night Bobby reenters the fridge and wakes up on the same day in a different parallel universe to a different loved one's death, attempting to escape this strange loop. While attempting to run from his fears, Bobby begins to understand how death is both scary but essential and serves a greater purpose in all of our lives.
We wanted to create a similar sense of chaos and confusion, while also grounding the set in consistent locations and areas. We did this through a mix of grounded “real world” areas, along with green screens, virtual realities, magical lighting, and a constantly spinning steadicam following Bobby around the space. As Bobby told his story to us, we were brought along, following in every step he took and attempting to figure out what is really going on.
The scenic and prop design team outsourced all of the props, furniture, and dressing in and around Ithaca, NY. We worked to fill, develop, and dress each space to create multiple rooms and worlds within the same stage.
Due to the pandemic, Hotel Good Luck was streamed through small cameras throughout the theater and a stedi-cam following Bobby around the space. The team leaned into the virtual nature of the show, allowing for green screens and virtual realms to be used throughout certain sequences.
